Joan Singleton, Museum Director
Bartlesville Area History Museum to Make Changes
The Bartlesville Area History Museum (BAHM) is undergoing changes according to Mike May, President of the BAHM Trust. “A restructuring is in process with new staff, a new staff position, and a new look at our area’s history. Joan Singleton, Director of the Bartlesville Public Library has accepted the position of joint directorship over the Library and the Museum.” From 1989-1996 while BAHM was a department of the Library Singleton was the Public Services Librarian responsible for the day-to-day activities relating to the History Museum.
In an effort to improve access to the collection for exhibits and researchers alike, the Museum is in the process of re-accessioning the entire collection from fragile fabrics and historical documents to Bartlesville bricks and glass bottles. To date, over 17,000 items have been processed; approximately 7, 000 of them are from the photo archives including Griggs photos, panoramas, and negatives. “We have a staff that are highly motivated and love their work;” said Singleton, “we are looking forward to completing this task and others that will make our museum collection more available. There are also opportunities for several collaborative projects between the Museum and the Library’s Local & Family History Area; plans are in the initial stages to explore these possibilities.”
The current exhibit in the Pioneer Gallery, “Through Frank’s Lens”, is a sampling of 160 Street Scenes of Bartlesville. It is the second of a three part series featuring the photographic artistry of Frank Griggs. During September and October, the final phase of the exhibit will highlight our “Social Life, 1908-1979”. Griggs came to Bartlesville in 1908 and began his career of documenting Bartlesville and the history of our area throughout his 70 years of photography.
All exhibits are free and open to the public, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, call 338-4290 or check out the website at www.bartlesvillehistory.com/.

History Museum Recognized by Governor and Congressmen in 2006 The Bartlesville Area History Museum was, along with 14 other state institutions, recognized at the State Capitol recently for their exemplary efforts to preserve the state’s documentary heritage. In a ceremony officiated by Congressman Tom Cole (R-District 4), Brenda Smith-Patten, registrar, was presented with a commendation from Governor Henry recognizing the museum as a “Model Archival Repository.” The museum participated in a rigorous 18-month program funded by the National Archives and Records Administration and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. In addition to completing special projects that resulted in the preservation of valuable local records, staff and volunteers participated in training programs and prepared written plans, policies, and procedures specific to the museum. “Our project was quite successful,” said Smith-Patten, “We managed to prepare a 5-year Strategic Plan and Disaster Plan for the museum and were able to objectively review our policies and procedures to help better serve our community. We were also able to re-house an important document collection known as the ‘Area Files’.”
